Field Surveying

Corridor traverse and alignment surveys, tower-site location in wooded terrain, terrain mapping and wetland location for land development, commercial site surveys, and field evaluation of brownfield parcels.

Corridor Surveys

Traverse and alignment for a trail corridor

On the greenway project at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, described under Transportation, Mr. Parnell laid out the corridor traverse and used field surveying to perform the preliminary geomatics that fixed the trail alignment. The traverse carried control along the roughly eight-mile route, and the fieldwork located the constraints the alignment had to thread — waterway crossings, roadway crossings, utility conflicts, buildings, and training areas — so that the design alignment could be set against measured positions rather than mapped approximations.

Tower Siting

Tower-location surveys in wooded terrain

At KCI Technologies, Mr. Parnell surveyed tower locations within wooded regions for the microwave and communications tower projects described under Foundations. Siting a tower in woods means establishing the site position and elevation from control that may be some distance away, running line through cover to the proposed center, and locating the access route, the compound footprint, and the guy or foundation positions relative to property lines and setbacks, all under limited sight distance.

Land Development

Terrain mapping and wetland location

At Paton/Zucchino & Associates in Raleigh, Mr. Parnell performed field surveying on several land-development projects for terrain mapping and wetland location. Terrain mapping supplied the topographic base — spot elevations, breaklines, and contours — on which subdivision lots, streets, grading, and drainage were laid out; wetland location tied the flagged wetland boundaries into that same base so that lot lines and improvements could be held clear of jurisdictional areas.

Commercial Sites

Outparcel preliminary survey

Mr. Parnell performed a preliminary survey of a commercial outparcel for a Hot ‘n Now franchise site. A preliminary outparcel survey establishes the parcel boundary, existing improvements, utilities, access, and topography so that the franchise’s site plan can be tested for fit before the site is committed to.

Brownfield Evaluation

Field survey of candidate redevelopment parcels

For Atlantis Developers, the brownfield site evaluations along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, described under Environmental, included field surveying of the candidate parcels. Field survey confirmed parcel extents and river frontage, located existing structures, fill, and visible evidence of past use, and provided the measured base on which the candidate sites were compared.

Delineation Fieldwork

Watershed and wetland delineation in the field

The watershed delineation for substation sites at the City of Austin Electric Utility Department and the wetland delineation for roadway projects at Pope Air Force Base for KCI Technologies, both described under Water Resources, were carried out in the field: walking and locating drainage divides in the one case and flagging and locating wetland boundaries in the other, then tying those positions to project control for mapping.
